Headaches: Not just in Your Head

Jeremy Rothenberg, a nationally certified diplomate of oriental medicine and licensed acupuncturist, has developed Somatic Acupuncture. This new comprehensive mind-body treatment eliminates pain by targeting the autonomic nervous system.
“Acupuncture affects the body’s energy system, described in traditional Chinese medicine as qi (pronounced ‘chee’),” Rothenberg says. “Qi circulates throughout the body along pathways called meridians. Stimulation of acupuncture points unblocks areas of stagnation and regulates the flow of energy, thereby, reducing pain.”
Somatic Acupuncture is a deeper level of treatment meant to synchronize mind and body. “Neck pain, for example, isn’t just in the neck; the whole body is involved.” says the San Francisco acupuncturist. “Acupuncture alone is useful as a first level of treatment because it usually removes pain symptoms immediately. However, to eliminate the recurrence of pain, it’s important to work directly with the patient’s stress response.”

Jeremy Rothenberg, MS, Dipl.OM, L.Ac., a San Francisco acupuncturist in general practice, has found extraordinary success treating migraines and chronic headaches by combining acupuncture with his own treatment method that targets the autonomic nervous system.
"Headaches aren't just in the head-the whole body is involved," said Rothenberg, a graduate of the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM). "Traditional Chinese medicine describes a vibrant energy, qi (pronounced 'chee') that circulates through the body through pathways called meridians. The meridians in the head also travel to the hands, feet, and interior of the body. By treating acupuncture points in the arms and legs, we are able to regulate that energy flow and, thereby, eliminate the pain."
